J/112E - Family Sport Cruising
The J/112E is a highly versatile, family, sport-cruising yacht. The “E” is for elegance and evolution in performance cruising design. Why settle for anything less than sailing where and when you want to in comfort, style and speed?
Dual Purpose
36 feet is a magic size in the J/Boats line-up. With a spacious two-cabin accommodation plan and a comfortable, ergonomic cockpit, the all-new J/112E is as well suited for the annual cruise as she is sprinting to Mackinac Island or short-handing through rough weather. Versatility in sailboat design means not only a sailboat that can do many things, but one that can do them across a wide range of conditions, both fair and adverse.
Upwind is a Breeze – Downwind is a Blast
The J/112E is an exceptional upwind performer. V-shaped bow sections provide superior directional stability and reduced slamming in waves. Freeboard forward and topside flare help to keep the deck dry. A long waterline combined with a low vertical center of gravity results in a smooth, sea-kindly motion – more like that of a 40 footer.
J/112E is a moderate displacement design with a high aspect, non-overlapping sailplan. This efficient set-up provides ample sail power in light winds (while most others are motoring), and easy to down-shift options when the wind builds. J’s are known for being able to sail well under mainsail alone, jib alone, and nearly any combination of mainsail and small jib.
The J/112E is no exception. All one needs is a mainsail and 105% jib to enjoy easy, high performance sailing in winds from 5 to 25 knots. For downwind fun with minimal effort and crew, one can deploy the asymmetric spinnaker from the retractable carbon sprit.
Designed to Sail
J owners have been sailing offshore for years and their enthusiastic feedback has fueled J/Boats’ continuous pursuit of designing the world’s most comfortable sailing boats. Comfort at sea means more than nice backrests (which by the way the J/112E has). “Sailing comfort” means sailing without stress – having clear visibility from the helm station; easy access to vital sail controls to allow short-handed sailing; a smooth sea-kindly motion that’s easier on the stomach; numerous handholds and foot braces both above and below decks for secure movement; and a highly maneuverable boat that is easy to dock or moor in tight places. Sailboats that inspire confidence (and reduce stress) inspire their owners to sail more. Maybe that’s why J/ sailors spend so much time sailing.
Infusion Construction
The J/112E hull, deck, main bulkhead and structural grid are built with resin infusion construction. Infusion is a method of introducing catalyzed resin into a pre-layout of dry material under vacuum. Dry fibers are placed in mold, with the core material and this is then covered by a special flow cloth and a flexible vacuum bag, a high pressure vacuum is then applied and a series of resin tubes draw catalyzed resin into the part. The result is a high quality method of production which produces results repeatedly and consistently. This allows dimensional control and regularity of weight and unlike a pre-impregnation process, does not require special materials storage conditions or an oven. An economic and reproducible process, direct positioning of dry fibers is easier and more precise than in traditional hand lay-up processes. It also allows controlled placement of fiber direction, as it is not impeded by gel times. The perfect control of the quantity of resin infused and the dry placement cloth make it possible to obtain extremely homogeneous finished parts. The weight variation of the piece is very small (1 to 2%), a performance which is impossible to achieve with hand lamination.
Performance Materials
The J/112E is molded with a vinylester barrier coat applied behind the durable gelcoat finishes. This combination in the outer hull layer allows for the best hull blister protection available. The aircraft grade end-grained balsa core and foam core in the deck are sandwiched between carefully selected and placed inner and outer skins of bi-axial and triaxial e-glass fabrics. This sandwich is infused under vacuum for resulting composite parts that are stiffer and lighter than hand-layup. This construction system improves sailing performance due to better strength to weight ratios in the part and improves sailing comfort by reducing weight and lowering the vertical center of gravity (VCG) of the boat.
Healthy Workplace
Working with dry materials does away with most exposure to resin & styrene, and does not require special protection, masks, gloves, oxygen tanks, etc.. During infusion and curing the styrene remains contained in the bag, thus reducing the emission of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) to less than 10 ppm and providing a much “greener” and healthier work environment.
